Prettiness of Persian Rugs

The true prettiness of Persian Rugs derives from the people who weave Persian Rugs. When we talk about the Persian or Iranian people we are not speaking of one broad ethnic group we are talking about many. While most Persians are Indo European a significant portion are Altaic Turkic, Dravidian, Kartvelian/Georgian, and Afro-Asiatic. Currently the people of Iran speak 79 different languages and countless dialects.Historic Persian Rugs are one of the world’s greatest undervalued art form. A few rugs are from known masters but the vast majority of Antique Persian Rugs are the product of unknown women expressing an art form that is one with their very being. There is not a Persian Rug but rather 10,000 different types woven in cities, towns and villages, where the rug was woven, the language or dialect of the weaver, and often her religion. Persian Rugs are as multi-faceted as the Persian people themselves.

Persian carpets and rugs have always been and still are an intrinsic part of Iranian culture and its people’s daily lives. Indeed, carpets and rugs are in many cases the most valued possessions, and they are an integral part of an Iranian home. Thus, it is not surprising that current production levels throughout Iran equal those reached prior to the Islamic Revolution of 1979. In fact, rugs are now even produced in areas where weaving was heretofore not practiced. To look at a Persian carpet is to gaze into a world of artistic magnificence nurtured for more then 2,500 years. The Iranians were among the first carpet weaver of the ancient civilizations and, through centuries of creativity and ingenuity building upon the talents of the past, achieved a unique degree of excellence of Persian Rugs.
